Teachings

Six senses. One quiet return.

More than 2,500 years ago, the Buddha described six sense bases—not only the familiar five, but also the mind.

When we treat the mind as a sense base, something shifts. A thought is no longer automatically 'me' or 'the truth'. It becomes an event that can be noticed, in the same way a bird call can be noticed.

This is a small change in how we look, and it can make a large difference in how we live.

  • Eye

Colour, shape and light arrive, and seeing happens.

  • Ear

Sound arrives and passes, whether we welcome it or not.

  • Nose

Scent appears quietly, often carrying memory with it.

  • Tongue

Taste is known directly, before any words are needed.

  • Body

Warmth, pressure, movement and breath—always available.

  • Mind

Thoughts, memories and images arise as their own kind of sensing.

Noticing the sixth sense

Jerry is a simple way of recognising mental activity as it happens—without arguing with it.
